The Faith that Shapes Us
We believe in one God who exists eternally in three persons: the Father, the Son (Jesus Christ), and the Holy Spirit. God is the creator, redeemer, and sustainer of all life, and we worship God as the source of love, grace, and truth.
We affirm that Scripture is our primary authority in matters of faith and practice. We interpret Scripture through the Wesleyan Quadrilateral, which invites us to engage Scripture, Tradition, Reason, and Experience as we seek to understand God’s will and live faithfully in the world.
We believe that salvation is a gift of God’s grace rather than something we earn. God’s grace is experienced as prevenient grace, which goes before us; justifying grace, through which we receive forgiveness by faith; and sanctifying grace, which nurtures us in lifelong growth toward holiness.
We are called to a life of holiness that is both personal and social. Personal holiness involves the inner transformation of our hearts and lives, while social holiness compels us to act with justice, compassion, and service in the world, recognizing that faith is lived out in community.
We celebrate the two sacraments Christ gave the Church: Baptism and Holy Communion. Baptism is offered to infants, children, youth, and adults as a sign of God’s covenant grace. Holy Communion is open to all who seek to follow Christ, reflecting our conviction that God’s table is a place of welcome and grace for everyone.
We believe that all people are of sacred worth and equally valued in God’s sight. Gresham-First UMC is committed to being an inclusive church where all individuals—regardless of race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender identity, or any other factor, are welcomed, affirmed, and invited to worship, participate, and serve fully in the life of the church.
