Backpack Buddies

Because no child should be hungry . . . a group of people in the community organized the Backpack Buddies program for children at Lynch Wood School who are chronically hungry. Of the 580 students enrolled at Lynch Wood, 400 qualify for free or reduced priced lunches. These children often go home to food unstable households.

The Backpack Buddies project will provide a select number of students with two meals to take home for each weekend.  These meals consist of child-friendly, non-perishable items in unbreakable packaging. SnowCap is generously offering support services for the project.

How you can help:

You are invited to join other members of Gresham United Methodist Church in addressing this important need by:

  1. Donating money.  $120 will provide weekend meals for one child for the entire school year.  $60 will provide packs for half the year.  $13 will send home food parcels for a month.  Checks payable to GUMC with Backpack Buddies in the memo area.
  2. Donating food.  Through SnowCap we are able to purchase most of the food from the Oregon Food Bank at a considerable discount.  Items most needed from donations are: (a) milk in individual boxes that do not need to be refrigerated, (b) individual fruit cups or fresh fruit, especially apples and oranges because they travel well.
  3. Sharing the work.  Help will be needed to:
*Pack the meals at SnowCap on the second and fourth Saturdays of each month.
*Deliver to the children on one Friday each month.
*Willingness to deliver on a substitute basis.
  4. Spreading the word.  Your neighbor or a friend may want to support a project that feeds hungry children.
